Aromatherapy: Basics And Benefits

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 626

Lately, society has seemingly taken a great interest in a more natural way of living.  There are chemicals and ingredients that our bodies are not accustomed to or do not need in practically every product you buy, from hormones in meat to aluminum in deodorant  Aromatherapy can offer an organic solution to aid in healthier lives.  It can provide great benefits for both mind and body.

To begin, what is aromatherapy?  To explain you must first understand essential oils.  Essential oils are pure oils from many different plants with no additives.  There are an abundance of different oils, each with a different use.

In aromatherapy, essential oils can be either inhaled or applied to skin (although they must be diluted before applying).  It is believed that inhaling the scent of these essential oils activates chemicals in the brain and also physically affects the lungs and sinuses (eucalyptus is good for nasal decongestion).

If choosing to apply the essential oils to your skin, never use the pure oil.  First, it needs to be diluted in a carrier oil such as grape seed, sweet almond, or even common olive oil.  Each has a different benefit so be sure to find one that suits your specific need.  The difference between a carrier oil and an essential oil is that the carrier oil is usually a cold-pressed vegetable oil and comes from the fatty parts of the plant.  The aroma is not nearly as strong and they do not evaporate like essential oils do.  When buying a carrier oil, be sure it is cold-pressed, as with this method there are more therapeutic benefits.  Mineral oil should not be used, as it will not absorb into the skin.  Mineral oil can be found in some makeup, which can cause acne breakouts for this very reason.  Carrier oils can expire, unlike, essential oils, so be aware.  Find an oil that has no additives, although vitamin E is an exception.

Essential oils have many uses and purposes.  Although relaxation is the most common use, think of lavender scented candles or laundry detergents and even dish soap; they can provide natural solutions to common problems.  Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant.  By putting a few drops into water, you can create a natural housecleaner, without harsh chemicals and strong odors.  Citronella, lavender, or peppermint, are natural ways to repel insects.  By learning and studying the diverse effects of the different oils you will be able to combine and create natural products for just about anything.

It takes time to learn all you need to know about essential oils and how to practice aromatherapy effectively and be sure to do that, as there can be hazards as well.  Some essential oils should never be used in the practice of aromatherapy and can be considered unsafe, so be sure to understand thoroughly what each oil is capable of to get the most out of the experience.  Many spas even offer classes on aromatherapy and will teach you how to reap the most benefits.

Aromatherapy is an interesting and beneficial beginning to a more natural life.  The benefits it can provide are both physical and psychological, helping you to achieve a more health conscious life.
